What do Japanese people wear everyday?
Western styles are broadly accepted in modern Japanese society. However, as a predominantly conservative country, Japan has some norms in dress codes, especially in the business scene.
Business Professional Attire: It is preferred to stick to black, navy, or dark gray suits with a neutral shirt and tie for formal business occasions.
Business Casual Attire: Men usually wear a shirt and casual blazer or a jacket, and trousers. Ties are not required. Women usually wear a shirt and cardigan or jacket, knee-length skirt or trousers.
Street Style: Although mainstream fashion in Japan is quite conservative, more impressive styles are famous as well. These are some of the well-known styles: Harajuku style, Kawaii style, and Lolita style.
Folkloric Attire
Kimono is a Japanese folk costume. Kimono has a case and is classified into 4 types. When wearing a kimono, it is important to wear a kimono that is suitable for the time, place, and occasion.
Shiro-muku is one of the Japanese wedding Kimono styles. It's the representative one, also the most prestigious Kimono among wedding costumes. Shiro-muku began as a samurai wedding costume during the Muromachi period.
The groom's costume that matches the Shiro-muku is Montsuki- Hakama. Black colored Haori Hakama with five crests is the most prestigious style. Hakama means pants, Haori means a jacket.
Furisode is first formal kimono for unmarried women. It is standard to be worn as a Seijin-shiki kimono. The Seijin-shiki is an event to celebrate people who will be 20 years old by the end of the year. 20 years old means the person is an adult in Japan. Also Furisode is suitable for parties, wedding receptions, graduation ceremonies, and wedding receptions.
The first Hakama, a pants kimono, was born in the Yayoi period, and in the last century it was mainly used as a formal dress for males, but it has also become a female enthusiast.
Nowadays, women's Hakama is a standard item for graduation ceremonies of university. Also Kendo's uniform.
Happi is one of traditional Japanese costumes worn at festivals. Also worn by craftsmen. Originally, the samurai wore a happi coat with a large dyed family crest, and then craftsmen and town firefighters also wore it.
