Food is one of the strongest indicators of the diversity that the Indian culture is well known for. This diversity is visible through dishes ranging across states, vegetarian and non-vegetarian, sweet and savoury, snacky food and hearty meals, and many other aspects. Each of the 28 states of India is known for its unique food heritage and consumption practices, making it an important aspect of all daily life, as well as celebrations and festivals. Rice, roti/ chapatti (round flatbread), lentils and vegetables are part of most traditional Indian diets, with chicken, mutton, fish and prawn curries being most commonplace among non-vegetarian diets.
India is also known to introduce the world to many traditional spices and ingredients such as Basmati Rice, Turmeric and Chai Tea. Indian food has also found its way to many countries, not just in the form of popular eateries, but also in the form of flavours and ingredients, incorporated in their "fusion food" recipes.
